TRACK: WILDLIFE WELFARE

SPEAKER: Dr. Adrian Walton, DVM, Veterinarian, Dewdney Animal Hospital

In 2013, an adult African Rock Python killed two young boys in New Brunswick. In Drumheller, Alberta, a local reptile zoo shut down after a young veterinary student disclosed horrible abuse and neglect. These are just two of the issues that animal cruelty societies are dealing with in larger and larger numbers. Dr. Walton discusses the history and issues surrounding exotic reptile pets and discusses how to work up inspection on large reptile facilities and hoarding facilities.

Three Key Learnings:
1. The History of the reptile and commercial reptile breeding trade
2. The current legal state in Canada and the United states, including the Controlled Alien Species act (BC) and the Lacey Act (United States) and the impacts on exotic animal ownership
3. How inspection agencies can work up large-scale cruelty cases
